(ABP) -- The July 4th weekend found me immersed in Christian political theology as I prepare to teach a course on this theme in Australia in a few weeks. Independence Day itself found me in one of my favorite places, Atlanta’s Turner Field, where my wife, son and I watched the patriotic tableau together with a Braves game. The convergence of these experiences leaves me thinking about themes of patriotism and its place in the Christian life.

(ABP) -- This year I have been working my way through the books dropped from the Protestant canon. I admit that when I was a Catholic kid I never read them and after I became a Baptist I believed I was not supposed to read them. I therefore missed an important part of the legacy of the Jewish tradition to the church and the world.

(ABP) -- On Saturday morning, June 5, 2010, I read that Al and Tipper Gore are separating after 40 years of marriage. On Saturday afternoon, I stood at the front of the First United Methodist Church in Jackson, Tennessee, saying “Her mother and I do” as we “gave away” our oldest, Holly, in marriage.
