(ABP) -- Contemporary ethicists have retrieved an ancient insight by emphasizing the central role of habit in morality. After centuries of moral theories that focused on identifying rational moral principles that ought to govern human decision making, today’s ethicists have remembered the Greek philosophical insight that we are creatures of habit. We are what we do; and most days what we do is driven by habits rather than by conscious choice.

(ABP) -- It is still hard to believe that the hopes we have nurtured in the Christian anti-torture movement would come to fruition -- and so early, and so comprehensively, as they did with President Obama’s executive orders on Guantanamo, detention policy and interrogation his first week in office. Those orders fulfilled, to a very large extent, the agenda that Evangelicals for Human Rights has been promoting since our founding. And in nearly every detail the president’s orders tracked with our declaration of principles for a presidential executive order, released last spring. We applaud the president for these decisions.
 
A humbled nation summons itself

(ABP) -- It was a humbled but hopeful America on display Tuesday in Washington. Staggered by economic crisis, wearied by two long, unresolved wars and damaged in its confidence and character, our nation summoned itself on Tuesday to enter a new era by drawing on older traditions and values that have carried us through our 233-year history.

(ABP) -- As I write this column, Jeanie and I are preparing to gather with a half-dozen young couples at church to begin a marriage class. For six weeks we will meet together to discuss ways that these nearly- and newlyweds can strengthen their marriages at their earliest stage.
