(ABP) -- For those who projected onto Barack Obama the hope that he would be a transformative figure, a peacemaker/great soul like Martin Luther King or Mahatma Gandhi, the targeted killing of Osama bin Laden ought to put such hopes to rest.

(ABP) -- Most everyone has a Mama story. One of my favorites must have happened when I was in the seventh or eighth grade. My mother never had many advantages in life. Married at 16, she worked in a cotton mill until her retirement. Her world was small. Family, mill, church were the parameters of her life.

(ABP) -- Churches this Sunday will give out a rose and clap for the oldest mother in the sanctuary. They will sing songs about family and pay no attention to the females who haven’t birthed a baby. They will preach children’s sermons that center on obedience and adult sermons that challenge everyone to call home. This Sunday, Christians across America will be challenged to honor their father and mother.

(ABP) -- Since the news first broke about Osama bin Laden’s death, Americans have been weighing in with their thoughts. Nearly without exception all we are hearing, at least by way of American mainstream media, is celebration and praise. As individual Americans are polled about their feelings concerning this action by the U.S. government, there is fairly universal exuberance.

(ABP) -- Opportunities for debate and discussion have skyrocketed in the wake of this week’s news reports of the death of Osama bin Laden. Right after the news broke, it seemed to me that everyone on Facebook had a comment; political pundits alighted on the subject with glee; even a stroll around that block took me past several folks engaged in sidewalk debates on the unfolding news story. The tenor of most of the conversations I heard was political; a few folks had a moral perspective on matters. Many pastoral colleagues, including myself, chimed in with theological opinions.
