MARION, Ala. (ABP) -- Judson College is poised to receive a $9 million Christmas present. Proceeds from the estate of Marian Acree Tucker of Dadeville, Ala., will be the largest bequest ever given by an individual donor to the Baptist-affiliated women's college in Marion, Ala.

Tucker died in May of 2003. She was 96.

David Potts, Judson's president, called Tucker's gift "an enormous milestone" for Judson College. "It is the first time we've received a gift that equals or exceeds the annual operating budget of the institution."

"Marian Tucker was among the most devoted alumnae of Judson College," he said. "She cared deeply about two institutions: the college and about First Baptist Church in Dadeville. We're grateful for the progress her gift will allow in this place for the work of Christian higher education, especially for women."

Potts said the funds will be invested and distributed throughout the college's programs, including the Marian Acree Tucker Scholarship. Tucker established the scholarship in 1979 to give financial assistance to women from the Dadeville area.

Tucker also gave funds for the 1994 construction of the Tucker Hall, which houses the department of fine and performing arts.

Tucker was a member of Judson's board of advisors from 1974 to 1978 and was a trustee from 1978 to 1985.

Potts said. These funds will make a favorable impact on the important mission of Judson College."

Founded in 1838, Judson College is one of the oldest colleges for women in the United States.
