SBC leader apologizes for Nazi analogy regarding Obama plan Print E-mail

NEW YORK (ABP) -- The head of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission has apologized for comparing Democratic health-care proposals to policies of Nazi Germany.

ERLC President Richard Land reportedly told a Christian Coalition of Florida banquet in Orlando Sept. 26 -- the night before the high Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur -- that Democratic leaders were advocating reform that will result in rationing of health care. Such policies, he said, were driven by the same ideology that fueled the Holocaust.

"I want to put it to you bluntly," Land said, according to the Florida Baptist Witness. "What they are attempting to do in health care, particularly in treating the elderly, is not something like what the Nazis did. It is precisely what the Nazis did."

Activist Lyndon LaRouche is one of several critics who have compared President Obama's proposals for health-care reform to Nazi policies.

Land went on to bestow an imaginary "Dr. Josef Mengele Award" on Ezekiel Emanuel, a doctor who is the president's chief health-care adviser.

Opponents of the president's plan have accused Emanuel, a medical ethicist and brother of the White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, of supporting euthanasia and rationing of health care. Mengele was a mastermind of Nazi genocide whose medical experiments at death camps earned him the nickname "The Angel of Death."

The Anti-Defamation League called on Land to apologize and refrain from similar comments in the future.

"While we understand there are deep convictions and passions regarding the healthcare reform, whatever one's views are, the Nazi comparison is inappropriate, insensitive and unjustified," ADL National Director Abraham Foxman told Land in an Oct. 9 letter. "As a Holocaust survivor, I take particular offense."

Foxman, who was born in Poland in 1940 and escaped the Holocaust under protection of his Polish Catholic nanny, said such comparisons "diminish the history and the memory of the 6 million Jews and 5 million others who died at the hands of the Nazis and insults those who fought bravely against Hitler."

Land responded Oct. 14 saying it was never his intention to "equate the Obama administration's health-care reform proposals with anything related to the Holocaust."

"Now that I have had the opportunity to speak with you personally and reflect on my words, I deeply regret the reference to Dr. Josef Mengele," Land wrote. "I was using hyperbole for effect and never intended to actually equate anyone in the Obama administration with Dr. Mengele. I will certainly refrain from making such references in the future. I apologize to everyone who found such references hurtful."

Land also voiced strong support for the State of Israel and expressed "grave concerns" about Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust.

Foxman welcomed Land's apology in a press release Oct. 15. "We hope that this episode will serve as a teachable moment that will help to improve understanding about Jewish history, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, and that the use of Nazi analogies will cease," the Jewish leader said.

The Anti-Defamation League has voiced concern about increasingly common statements comparing efforts to reform health care with Nazi euthanasia programs.

Following criticism from Democrats, the National Republican Congressional Committee recently removed a Twitter feed linking to a video parody dubbing a 2004 Hitler biopic with subtitles. In them, the Nazi dictator bemoans having been duped by Obama's promise for universal coverage and rants, "At least I still have Pelosi on my side."

In August, talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh compared President Obama's health-care logo to a swastika.

Conservative Fox News personality Glenn Beck has invoked the Holocaust several times, most recently comparing the Obama administration's treatment of the network to Nazi persecution of the Jews.

Holocaust imagery hasn't been confined to one party. Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) compared the current  health-care system in the United States to a "holocaust." His comments came in response to demands that he apologize for summarizing the Republican health-care strategy as, "Don't get sick, and if you do get sick, die quickly."

Grayson, who is Jewish, later said he didn't mean to minimize the Holocaust and regretted the choice of words.

David Harris, president of the National Jewish Council, told The Huffington Post there have been roughly 50 instances in the past few months where either a media personality or politician manufactured a Nazi analogy or Holocaust reference to make a point.

The Baptist Center for Ethics' website EthicsDaily.com reported Oct. 7 that it contacted Land for reaction to criticism of his Sept. 26 comment and received an e-mail response saying, "The analogy is apt, and I stand by it."

Glad to see Land apologize for at least one of his stupid remarks. Far too many of his efforts as the head of the SBC's "Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission" have largely been a laughable and pathetic excuse for Christian discourse and prophetic speech.

I am not a big fan of Land, but his claim has merit. When government determines who should receive care and what kind of care should be given what principles guide them? Nazi leaders wanted efficiency and left the weak, old, and unimportant without care. Our president is talking about efficiency through denying care also. There is a link here for those who understand these policies.

not a great comparison, but substance has merit

It generally is not a good idea to compare people with Hitler. But if we passed and implemented the entire Obama program, then that would likely lead to non-price rationing, which means denying care to the elderly and others who are deemed less important to the state.

I may be wrong, but to me the definition of "prophetic speech", in the context they were used, would be words coming from one who is considered to be divinely inspired.

Again, I may be wrong, but the way I read ABP Reader's comment is that
the usage of "prophetic speech" in the sentence tie back to "laughable and pathetic" which in turn tie back to "Land's efforts".

Again I may be wrong, but my thoughts on Land's remarks are to agree with his accessment of the proposed health care reforms, but wonder about an educated Southern Baptist leader who is so poor at choosing how to convey their message to the public.

Funny -- those who oppose Obama refer to "rationed care." They seem oblivious to the fact that the insurance companies already ration health care by denying benefits to which policy holders are entitled. Peoplek are dying because health insurance companies want to fatten their purses.
However, if anyone one would know the mind of Hitler, it would be Land. He has always been deep into that kind of company.

Nabhi,

If my insurance does not cover promised care I can go to court or find another insurance company. If government controls all of health care I have no choice but to swallow the bread crumbs thrown at me.

Is anyone surprised when the BP does not report derogatory news about one of theirs? Is anyone surprised that the BP does not have means to respond to individual articles as we are using here? Could we say this method of opinion control has often been used in the past by those attempting to control public opinion negative to the people in power?

"If my insurance does not cover promised care I can go to court or find another insurance company." And die while you wait to win your case. Under HR 3200, if you are covered under the public option and they deny your care, the same is true. So how is the public option so terrible compared to private insurance?

And how is the government making sure everyone has at least a minimal level of care equal to millions murdered?

"However, if anyone one would know the mind of Hitler, it would be Land. He has always been deep into that kind of company."
Don't sink the their level. Neither Obama nor Dr. Land are in any way comparable to Hitler. Save the Hitler comparisons for megalomaniac madmen who murder en masse through a sick idealistic vision of the perfect society. Those who simply have a scary idealistic vision of the perfect society (that, unsurprisingly, looks a lot like them) have not crossed the line that makes them worthy of the comparison.

Kash,

Any insurance company that does not take care of its patients will lose customers and go out of business. A government health care plan can never go out of business because its income is mandatory taxes and debt spending. Such a system contains no reason to put the customer first, but rather play up care to certain groups with political pull.

Millions will be murdered because abortion is covered under the new Baucus plan.

Funny, I was thinking a watered-down version of "claim has merit": Obama's no Nazi (I hope!), but he does have a similar goal for a different reason.

KT: I promise you there's a liberal reading your comment, thinking the insurance companies play it up to the wealthy so they still get cash. And that could be true; can we show it to be false or fix it?

I must admit, I would find an elderly person's death less unpleasant than a young dude's... as long as I didn't know either. But I still don't like using government to accomplish that if it's unnecessary.

I am sick of this radical leftist administration demonizing entire industries. Now these radicals are demonizing the insurance industry. The current administration must have an enemy- a straw man.The insurance industry and all of its hard-working people are not the enemy. The radical, leftist, fascistic goals of the current administration are the enemies of a free, capitalistic US.

Dr J, you obviously have no knowledge of history. Your post is merely repeating the nonsense that we heard in the Palin 2008 church meetings this August 2009 townhalls. Here's the problem: how can the administration be according to you 'radical leftist' and 'fascist' at the same time? History tells us the two are not the same. Still dont understand? Go read the history books, and stop listening to Glenn Beck! That guy have you all on a string like yo-yos. Start thinking for yourself Dr J!

My response to your question Jes is that making money is not a crime. An insurance company only makes money if it has customers. The only way to get customers is to provide good service. If an insurance company tries to gouge its customers an honest insurance company with fair business practices will take away their customers. The is basic capitalism, which has not been taught in public schools for 50 years. Then again, what is taught in public school?

I also strongly disagree that a young persons life is more valuable than an old mans. God does not make such a distinction. I would also ask that you remember the many wise older men of history who have literally changed the world for good. The Bible respects age because of the wisdom one attains over time. Old people are very valuable.

Also, keeping old people alive enables hospitals to make money. These medical corporations, after paying stock holders, invest their profits in medical research. This research enriches all of our lives. Older citizens are the cash cows that fund the enormous medical breakthroughs of the last generation. To cut services is to cut profits which leads to less medical breakthroughs and cures.

As for Palin, how I wish she were president. Not because I like her, but because I think President Obama is a failure. Unemployment is at 10%. He has spent so much money that inflation is sure to come. . . giving all of us a pay cut. . . not to mention the extra taxes coming our way due to his spending. His VP says "We underestamated the economy." Yet the President is the first to say "I inherited the worst economy since the great depression." Both cannot be true. Democratic economic principles simply do not work. I guess we needed another Jimmy Carter to figure that out. . . again!

By the way, what got us into this mess was the housing market. President Bush with his compassionate conservatism allied himself with liberal democrats like Barney Frank and pushed through regulation that forced banks to give home loans to poor people. To everyone shock, poor people cannot afford to own a home. Yet Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bought up bad loans for years. Sure enough the bad loans, now in the form of investments, started to default. Before long no one would buy Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (They are both run by the government) mortgages. For those of you who don't know, banks give loans and then sell them to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Fannie and Freddie put hundreds of mortgages together and sell them on the market as investments. When word got out that Fannie and Freddie were selling toxic loans to poor people, no one bought them. If Fannie and Freddie cannot sell their mortgages they cannot buy newly made mortgages from banks. If banks cannot sell mortgages to F & F they quit giving loans. No loans, and people cannot buy homes. If people cannot get loans for homes real estate prices tank because no one has money to buy it. . . and a huge recession happens because everyone who owns homes loses the wealth invested in their homes.

To make a long story short, democratic policies with a compassionate President Bush sunk our economy. This is what happens when people abandon conservative economic principles. That said, president Bush tried to reform the system seeing the coming train wreck but democrats like Barney Frank and liberal senators blocked him. How helped are the poor now? Ah, the law of unintended consequences!

Where in all this does anyone advocate government 'controlling all of health care' KT2005? Facts matter! Even the scholarly Mr. X says only that reform would 'likely' (he's not absolutely sure) lead to non-price rationing--for people who now have no insurance at all! Facts matter.

I am not a fan of Dr. Land, but I thought he showed some courage in issuing his statement against torture a while back, against what a majority of Southern Baptists think.
how non-price rationing could occur if the Obama plan takes effect
written by Xenophon, October 21, 2009
Thanks tbird for the complimentary reference. In answer to your query about how non-price rationing could occur under the Obama health care reform package, take a look at this analysis by Bernadine Healy, M.D. appearing in *U.S. News & World Report* recently:

This set of reforms would affect everyone.

The single payer system is where the government is the single payer for health care. Both the president and many democrats (Barney Frank) support such a system. That said, this plan cannot currently pass. Yet the government does not have to control all of health care to dominate it. If the government controls enough market share it can control prices. Republicans, fearful of this reality, created a new medicare plan that allowed government money to pay for private insurance under medicare. This kept the government from controlling too much of the health industry. Democrats are proposing to cut these payments, which creates all the "Democrats are cutting medicare" language.

The problem is the slippery slope. If the government can gain market share they would be able to set prices. Since medical spending is currently on an unsustainable trajectory, private insurance will go out of business. Leaving Uncle Sam to pay the bills with his supposedly bottomless pockets. This scenario is a reasonable fear, and many propose a backdoor way to get to single payer.

Thanks for your response to my post. Obviously, you are much wiser and more learned. That said, the current administration is filled with radical leftists advocating fascism. Please don't try to educate me anymore Harry. While you undoubtedly are most qualified, I prefer to think for myself and reach my own conclusions based on truth not on propaganda from the current administration. Capitalism is the primary reason the US is a great free country. The current administration is destroying capitalism and freedom.

Dear KT:
Take a look at Florida. The state government introduced competition and market mechanisms to its reform of healthcare. It is a superior option to the government option that will drive out competition, raise prices/taxes, ration care, decide who is worth living and who is not, and eliminate much of our individual freedom.
