Opinion: In pre-Copenhagen rally, did we ‘Wave’ cynicism good-bye? Print E-mail

(ABP) -- An estimated 40,000 people (all of whom had been asked to wear blue clothing and paint their hands blue) gathered at noon on Dec. 5 in Grosvenor Square, in the heart London, for what had been billed as the largest climate-change protest ever on British soil. The Wave, the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition's big march, was a color-coded affair, with flair.

The event -- timed to precede the big United Nations climate-change summit taking place the following week in Copenhagen, Denmark -- featured blue wigs, blue face-paint (helpfully provided by volunteers at the entrance to the square), blue T-shirts, banners, posters and body suits. The color coordination added to the effect which, if not the “human wave” intended by the organizers, at least gave the demonstration a unified and intentional feel.

The event had been branded, by some members of the coalition, as “a family-friendly demonstration” rather than a “protest,” probably in order to comfort and reassure those nervous of the violence or the police reaction often associated with anti-globalization protests. But they needn't have worried. Generally speaking, this protest was more about dancing than throwing bricks through Starbucks windows, and the extent of demonstrators' contact with the police seemed to be limited to elderly marchers asking directions and police helpfully pointing them to the nearest toilet/coffee shop/subway station.

Just as at the 2005 Make Poverty History rally, political agitators of various shades of red; anarchists; a few hippies; and hordes of nice, polite, middle-class people who love Jesus got along just splendidly with each other as they all worked (and walked) for a common cause.

On paper, it could all seem terribly strange and unlikely. But in reality, the placards handed out by mainstream British Christian groups like Christian Aid, Tearfund and Cafod commingled easily with those of the Socialist Workers Party and the Green Party. Placards with messages like “Power to the poor” (Christian Aid), “Climate justice now” (Tearfund) and “Our climate in our hands” (Cafod) were carried by groups of people also carrying more political messages, like “Capitalism means crisis and climate chaos” (Socialist Workers Party) and “Carbon cuts, not welfare cuts” (Green Party).

Home-made signs and banners were also in evidence, from the cute: “Cuddles not carbon” (on a heart-shaped green placard), to the simply profound: “People over profits” and the frankly sarcastic: “Carbon trader = eco-crusader.”

An image from the Dec. 5 "The Wave" event in London.

The anti-carbon-trading placards were carried by a group of students, dressed in pinstriped suites, all sporting stick-on moustaches (yes, including the women) handing out deeply ironic pamphlets titled, “Carbon Trading: the Final Solution” while megaphoning slogans like, “Trust me, I'm a banker!” and: “We took care of your mortgages, we can take care of pollution!” at the crowd. And that satirical attack on the wisdom of carbon trading was not alone in the weirdness stakes. People in full polar-bear costume, a splendid tiger, someone in a cow suit with a sign carrying the dubious message, “You can't eat meat and be an environmentalist,” people with blue hair, blue faces, blue beards and blue moustaches marched alongside very ordinary-looking people of every age and economic background.

Dedicated protesters from the Climate Camp movement made anarchism look perfectly orchestrated as they drummed their way along the route of the march, providing festive spirit and recycled, organic beats of fantastic energy and complexity for fellow marchers. Other music providers carried battery-powered sound-systems in wheelbarrows, playing Paul Simon, or pedal-powered amplifiers belting out other kinds of music. Children sporting labels saying, “I’m praying for the planet” had the message of socialist revolution patiently explained to them by an activist newspaper-vendor, and trade-union banners fluttered above cassocked Franciscan monks in woolly jumpers.

Everywhere, people who would ordinarily not talk to each other were united for a few hours in a common cause. It felt a bit like one imagines heaven, only with more rain and blistered feet. The question to be answered over the next week of meetings in Copenhagen will be whether this demonstration (of so much more than political will to save the planet) achieves anything.

Such hypocrisy.

People are flying in jet planes to Copenhagen to tell the rest of the world why they shouldn't fly in jet planes. Am I the only one who sees a contradiction here?

Mr Langley, just what is it you would like to be achieved at this joke of a conference. We should all be good stewards of our planet. But the left-wing idea that the world needs to be saved is a very sad joke. Man cannot save the planet, nor can they destroy it. You just want the United States to fork out money for your lost cause. Moving on now...

The view given in this article of the protest is far from what really happened on the streets in London. Maybe from the penthouse suite it looked like heaven but from street level it looked like socialists and communists protesting against freedom, against fair trade of goods, against fair pay for hard work. It looked like a protest in support of atheistic socialism and communism in which the wealth of America will be stolen and given to leaders of nations who have plundered their own country and now want to plunder ours. In west tennessee it was 23 degrees this morning and winter is still 2 weeks away. O, i forgot, in the winter it is called climate change and in the summer it is called global warming. That is why we had no major hurricanes this year. Why Nashville had record lows in july. Nashville is Gore's hometown, ha, ha! Cap and trade is simply another way for politicians to rob wages from workers and give to those who wont work. It is another avenue towards one world government and economy. Global warming is proved to be false even this month by e-mails from those hwo lie to support it. America is about to die from ignorance and apathy while the politicians loot the it on the way down.

Good post. We're having frigid temperatures all across the U.S while our president is preparing to attend a conference on "global warming." Who says God doesn't have a sense of humor?

Perhaps a Reread of the article and a bit of a web search before commenting please
"atheistic socialism" - Did you see how Christian Aid, Tearfund and Cafod(Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) not only had a huge presence but printed many of the posters?
"wealth of America will be stolen and given to leaders of nations who have plundered their own country and now want to plunder ours."- Americas wealth is largely due to trade deals which force poor countries to sell goods cheaply to your consumers whilst they must push money from their people to paying huge (and largely immoral) debts (incurred when they were colonies, or by World Bank mandate) to America and Europe.

Climate change is just that- change. It will get hotter in most places but since it'll take just a 2 degree rise (I'm not sure I'd notice that) for all the polar bears to die I think a personal "feeling" about the temperature is pointless.

Ignorance and apathy are definitely a major problem and need to be tackled and it is caring for the workers to look seriously at climate change. it is the working class who will not be able to afford to "get out the way" when climate change floods low lying areas for example. A comparative example : it was the poorest workers who where left out in the cold in New Orleans and we can be sure that they will be the first to feel the hard edge of climate change.

"it is the working class who will not be able to afford to 'get out the way' when climate change floods low lying areas for example."

It is also the working class who won't be able to afford all the high taxes and the high energy costs resulting from the new regulations proposed by global warming alarmists. It seems to me that the government if the government really wants to deal with this problem, they should impose huge taxes on all these people who travel in private planes to warn the rest of us about global warming. If their "science" is true, then they're doing far more to harm the environment than I am.

Excuse the poorly-worded sentence in my last post. I accidentally posted the comment before I finished editing it. I think it's clear enough for you to get the idea, though.

How do you explain all the emails from Global Warming Heads that prove they have been lying for years. They also prove that they know there are millions of ignorant people who will believe everything they see on A.B.C. Stop watching The View and try having a little common sense. The government cant even deliver the mail without going bankrupt. If global warming did exist, what makes you think that anything the government does would help? Al Gore is making millions of dollars from his deception. If you think people like Al Gore and Whoopi are concerned about the life of the poor you are truly ignorant. They support the murder of millions of unborn children every year. Those children will never experience life on this planet, warming or not. The only green the liberals are really concerned about is the green of the money they are making from brainwashed ignorant americans. How's my spelling? I really am trying harder to meet your approval.
Christian? organizations
written by Bobby McCord, December 16, 2009
There were some organizations represented that call themselves Christians. That does not make them Christian. Just look at some of the articles on this web site that promote gay rights, socialism, and pluralism. The writers of these articles call themselves Christians but that doesn't make it so.
What do you think now?
written by Bobby McCord, December 18, 2009
What do you think now as we watch the riots in the streets from the far left socialist and communist global warming freaks? Not so peaceful are they? its Quiet on this comment page now.
