Evangelical leaders support abortion compromise in health-care plan Print E-mail
By Bob Allen
Friday, December 18, 2009

WASHINGTON (ABP) -- Thirty-nine pro-life Christian pastors and leaders released a statement Dec. 18 applauding alternative language aimed at preventing health-care reform from being derailed by debate over abortion.

With bill supporters in the Senate lacking a filibuster-proof majority to ensure passage sweeping health-care legislation backed by the Obama administration, Sen. Robert Casey (D-Pa.) proposed compromise language aimed at winning support of anti-abortion Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.). He has said he will not support a vote to close debate -- requiring 60 votes in the chamber -- on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in the Senate.

Evangelical leaders including Ron Sider of Evangelicals for Social Action, Florida mega-pastor Joel Hunter and Christianity Today Editor David Neff applauded Casey's effort to move debate over health-care beyond abortion.

"Sen. Casey’s alternative language, which we expect to be available in its final legislative form soon, could ensure that strong provider-conscience protections passed in the House bill are maintained; no federal funds pay for abortions in any way; and no [insurance] premium dollars from individuals who opt out of abortion coverage will be used to fund abortions," the leaders said.

Baptist signers included David Gushee, a professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University who writes a regular column for Associated Baptist Press, and Glen Stassen, a former Southern Baptist Theological Seminary professor who now teaches Christian ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary.

The evangelical leaders also welcomed expansion of economic-support measures in the legislation, citing statistics that 73 percent of women who have an abortion say they cannot afford to have a child.

"Given the complicated set of concerns surrounding abortion funding and coverage in health care reform, this alternative language ... is a way forward," the leaders said. "We urge all other pro-life people of good will to give it the careful consideration it deserves."

Douglas Johnson, the legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, said in an e-mail to media outlets that Casey's proposal is "entirely unacceptable" and called it "an exercise in cosmetics."

Republicans prefer language in the House version that includes an amendment by anti-abortion-rights Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), to prevent any plans in the proposed national-health-insurance exchange from receiving federal subsidies if they cover abortion.

Planned Parenthood opposes the Stupak Amendment, saying it reaches further than the Hyde Amendment, which has prohibited federal funding of abortion in most instances since 1977.

The Stupak Amendment prevents the government from paying directly for abortions or subsidizing private plans that cover abortions. Individuals could still purchase plans that cover abortion with their own money.

This so-called pro-life evangelicals seem to care more about securing financial insurance (it is what healthcare insurance does) for all rather than protecting babies from murder- disgusting.
Senator Casey Compromise on life
written by Grindel, December 18, 2009
This is how I see the current Senate language

Knock, Knock. There is someone at your door. It’s a neighbor and they need financial help. They explain they are expecting a baby but they just found out their baby is a girl and they want a boy so they need money for an Elective abortion. You explain that you are personally against abortion so you decline to offer financial support. They counter with saying we understand but they say they don’t have enough money for their car payment and pay for an abortion so they promise you that if you give them financial support they will spend your money on their car payment which will free up the their car payment money to pay for the abortion. They say that should clear up any moral issues for you, and the US Senate agrees wholeheartedly with them.

Knock, Knock. There is someone at your door. It’s a neighbor and they need financial help. They explain they are expecting a baby but they just found out a promotion opportunity has come open at work for the mother so they have changed their minds and want to terminate the pregnancy. You explain that you are personally against abortion so you decline to offer financial support. So they and the Senate say…

Knock, Knock. There is someone at your door. It’s a neighbor and they need financial help. They explain they just found out they are expecting they explain they just can’t seem to get that discipline, responsibility thing down. The previous 3 times this happened they aborted but they don’t have the money this time. You explain that you are personally against abortion so you decline to offer financial support. So they and the Senate say…

Knock, Knock. There is someone at your door. It’s a neighbor and they need financial help. They explain they are expecting a baby and it is quite late in the pregnancy. They have changed their mind and because it’s late the Doctor is recommending a Partial-Birth Abortion. You explain that you are personally against abortion so you decline to offer financial support. So they and the Senate say…

The number of sex selection abortions in the USA number in the thousands and the number is growing. Even China has outlawed sex selective abortions because it is causing an imbalance of genders.

The number of abortions performed on women who are seeking their 4th abortion or more is estimated to be over 70,000 per year per Planned Parenthood statistics.

It does not matter if your state has banned, except in the case of health of the mother, such Elective abortions like Partial Birth abortions after “viability” there are many states that have no such viability restrictions. In essence per the Senate language you are asked to help fund other states abortions that would not be allowed in your own state. Remember this is not about the legality of abortion or abortions that involve the life of the mother, rape or incest this is about who pays for “Elective” abortions.

Senator Casey's language if accepted will mean tax dollars will subsidize unlimited "Elective" abortions regardless of reason or type.
Its All About Money

Gindel has clearly exposed the lies of this so called "compromise" which is really a capitulation to those who not only want to murder babies, but want someone else to pay the hit man.

Who are these self appointed "evangelical leaders"? They are neither evangelical nor leaders. Anyone who reads ABP on a regular basis knows that Mr. Gushee isn't a 32nd cousin to an evangelical and he isn't a leader of anything.

Nope, they are not leaders, they are religious harlots who prostitute religion for money. They are the sort of whom Ezekiel wrote when he said,

"Thou hast built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied thy whoredoms."

Baptists have to ask themselves if these sentiments by so-called 'left-leaning evangelicals' really reflect Baptists. I am not Baptist, I am Catholic but have many Baptist friends. It is my opinion that these views DO NOT reflect most Baptists. Then why not? Well, many of us Catholics found a similar "element" operating within our own ranks. There are those, believe it or not, who actually have no real interest in spreading the gospel of Christ -- and they have entered our christian churches hoping to bring about 'major changes' from the inside out. One pope once described it as the 'smoke of Satan' entering the church. Baptists, I am asking you, do these 'evangelicals' seem authentic? IF NOT, throw the bums out and GO BACK to the gospel of Christ . . . via the New Testament. Peace.
There Is No Compromise With Evil!
written by emorel48, December 20, 2009
As an RN and someone who has lived long enough that my generation watched abortion legalized and the womens movement begin its spirit of witchcraft move to destroy the family, I can tell you in no uncertain terms that those who compromise with the forces of evil are either deluded or are decietful in what their real motives are. There is no right time for abortion and those who think there is are not followers of our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I worked Labor and Delivery and witnessed miracle after miracle as another beautiful life came into the world. I also have worked with women who have had abortions and the guilt and sorrow that follow these poor souls throughout life is horrible. It takes the precious blood of Jesus to cleanse and calm these wounded victims who accepted like most people the governments approval of baby killing.

Those church leaders who claim to be christians and support this travesty are either wolves in sheeps clothing or not saved at all. They do not know on a personal basis the Creator and Giver of Life.

Our Lord told us this kind of thing would happen to the church in the last days. The Laodicean Church Age it is called. A church that is so impotent spiritually that she will not take a stand against evil and aligns herself with the world system. Many a church leader has followed this wide road to destruction. But don't listen to me. I am a sinner saved by grace just like any other who names the name of Jesus. But, Our Jesus has this to say! Revelation 3:14-19

14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

May our precious Lord Awaken all who are his that have been deceived by Satan and his system. May he bring a great revival before his return to end all of the evil we are seeing happen in this old world. May many more souls be won for the Lord Jesus Christ before that day. May Abortion and the killing of the unborn be stopped.

compromise on life

any compromise on life, means death for more of america's unborn.

Mr. McCord, from other threads on this site I find it hard to picture you as someone who cares about the sanctity of life...ALL life. You seem to love the unborn but the born...not so much. Some of those unborn would have grown up to be homosexuals and THEN you would want to stone them. At least if they die before they have reached the "age of accountability" their souls will be in heaven, right? If they are born, they might grow up and not become Christians and then you would want to condemn them to eternal damantion. You conservatives are so inconsistent in your so-called "pro life" beliefs.

I don't want my money going to fund bombs being dropped on innocent civilians (some of them pregnant women) in Iraq and Afghanistan. Where is my pro-life "Stupak amendment" in the funding for the war under Bush and now Obama???? Why is it only unborn American babies that you people care about????
Compromise is a two-way street.
written by Ken, December 22, 2009
Compromise, by definition, requires concessions by both sides. Yet it seems every time people want to talk compromise on the abortion issue, it's always the pro-life side who is expected to make concessions.

Abortion is legal up to the point of delivery. A woman can get an abortion for any reason. It's one of the least-regulated medical procedures in the country. In many states, minors can receive abortions without parental knowledge or consent. Now the pro-abortionists say taxpayers should foot the bill for it.

Before I'm willing to talk compromise, I want to know what concessions the pro-abortionists are willing to make. I've asked that question several times, and I've yet to receive an answer.

"You seem to love the unborn but the born...not so much."

My wife and I are looking into adoption. Are you?

"Some of those unborn would have grown up to be homosexuals"

That presumes that people are born homosexual, which is an extremely dubious presumption.

"and THEN you would want to stone them."

Where has Mr. McCord or anyone else ever called for stoning homosexuals? Please cite.

written by kash, December 23, 2009
"That presumes that people are born homosexual, which is an extremely dubious presumption." Only about as dubious as the fact that the earth is older than 10,000 years old and that species evolve over time. In other words, only dubious if your faith is such that you ignore scientific evidence to the contrary because it interferes with a simplistic reading of scripture.
As to what McCord thinks, read through his posts under "Rick Warren breaks silence on Ugandan anti-gay law". He makes it clear that he does not consider homosexuals to be children of God. He believes the convenient but untrue assertions that all homosexuals are pedophiles and perverts, and that they are primarily responsible for the spread of AIDS in Africa and are knowingly doing so in a calculated attempt to murder people - all of which is patently false and simply made up to justify punishing and killing people that Mr. McCOrd does not like or understand. Not a Christian attitude. There are many more verses in the BIble that condemn homophobia than homosexuality, and more to the point, the verses that condemn homophobia and admonish us to love our neighbors - even the ones we consider sinful - are the ones that Jesus kept going back to again and again. He ate with those considered outcasts at the time, much to the dismay of the religious authorities. Jesus is alive and well in Uganda today, an he is eating with the homosexuals and those infected with AIDS, he is not advocating executing them.

"Yet it seems every time people want to talk compromise on the abortion issue, it's always the pro-life side who is expected to make concessions." Well, it would seem that way to you, but what about the Stupak amendment, or the Hyde laws? Abortion is already limited in when it can be paid for by federal funds, even though it is legal. The pro-choice crowd would call that a concession.
"Now the pro-abortionists say taxpayers should foot the bill for it." No, they say that plans should be available in the public marketplace that include coverage for abortion, but those plans will NOT be paid for with federal funding. That is what the Hyde law already says. The Stupak amendment would go beyond that, and the public marketplace could not include abortion, even when being paid for by private money. That is not only asking the pro-life side to compromise. Both sides have already compromised, its just that neither side sees the other side as compromising.

Life

Why is the average life expectancy much shorter for homosexuals in america than for straights? Could it be that most of them live dangerous lives, with AIDS, drugs, perversion, and violence? I do support life, the life of the unborn and the life of the innocent. I never said I wanted all the gays to be stoned. They are the ones who are basically taking their own lives. I just dont want them taking the lives of the innocent by promoting their sinful lifestyle as normal. Kash is a good name for the gay rights supporters because our culture is concerned about one thing CASH. Thats why the abortion mills prosper and that is why the gay rights prosper. its all about who will give more KASH to the politicians to achieve the vote they want. If I caught anyone trying to lure my grand children into the abomination of homosexuality, I would not be above throwing a well placed stone.

"In other words, only dubious if your faith is such that you ignore scientific evidence to the contrary because it interferes with a simplistic reading of scripture."

What "scientific evidence"? The so-called "gay gene"? Not all scientists agree that there is such a thing. From what I've read, the so-called "scientists" who discovered this gene were homosexuals. Thus, they found it because they WANTED to find it. As my Dad used to say, "Figures don't lie, but liars can figure."

"He makes it clear that he does not consider homosexuals to be children of God."

When a person lives in open and blatant sin, and denies that he's doing anything wrong, I find it difficult to call that person a child of God. Created in God's image, yes; a true child of God, no.

"He believes the convenient but untrue assertions that all homosexuals are pedophiles and perverts"

Suppose they found a gene that was common in all pedophiles? Would that mean pedophiles were born that way? Would that make their sexual preferences any less perverted?

Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop weighed in this subject some years ago. He pointed out that a genetic connection exists between alcoholics and their children. However, as Dr. Koop also pointed out, that doesn't make alcoholism any less of a disorder, nor does it mean alcoholism is untreatable. Why should we take a different attitude toward homosexuals?

"but what about the Stupak amendment, or the Hyde laws?"

These were defeats for the pro-abortionists, not concessions. They continue to fight against these provisions tooth and nail. Incidentally, the Stupak amendment was taken out of the Senate version. Bart Stupak himself called the Senate bill "unacceptable."

"No, [the pro-abortionists] say that plans should be available in the public marketplace that include coverage for abortion, but those plans will NOT be paid for with federal funding."

That's not what I've heard them say. I've heard them say that they want a "public option" (that is, government-funded) that will cover abortion.
Gay Gene
written by Bobby McCord, December 27, 2009
In a way I agree that some are born to homosexuality. Just like all men are born with a sin nature. That sin nature will express itself in many ways even in the abomination of homosexuality. When a person is saved, all things become new, we have a new master, we have a new nature. We will still comitt sin but the new testament is clear that a person who lives in sin is lost. You cannot use your so called Gay Gene as your excuse now nor will you be able to when you stand before Christ in judgement. No where in God's Word does it say that homosexuality is a life that is lived by a true believer. It is the life of a reprobate.

written by kash, December 30, 2009
This is off the point, but consistent that all some Christians seem obsessed with is homosexuality. No, there is not a 'gay gene'. Genetic inheritance is almost always a factor of many genes working together and influenced by environment, other genes, etc. But there is an inheritable component to homosexuality, as it does tend to occur more often in certain familial lines in statistically significant numbers. And homosexuality itself is not an either-or trait, like brown or blue eyes, but more like a range of sexual preferences - from strongly heterosexual to strongly homosexual with a whole range of possiblilities in between. Which is why for some people homosexual attraction can be overcome.

"Suppose they found a gene that was common in all pedophiles? Would that mean pedophiles were born that way? Would that make their sexual preferences any less perverted?" THere probably IS a genetic component to pedophilia, just like many mental illnesses. And no, it doesn't make their sexual preferences any less unfavorable. And if they act on those preferences, they should be imprisoned, as a protection to themselves and their victims. But pedophilia is to homosexuality as rape is heterosexuality. NOt the same thing. A violent and cruel subset of behavior (sex) that is criminal and unacceptable in civilized society. But homosexual relations between two consenting adults is not criminal. You may think it sinful, but it is not criminal.
Truth vs Love
written by Bobby McCord, January 04, 2010
The problem is that some people who call themselves Christian want to sacrifice the Truth in the name of love. When Truth and Love are in opposition to each other, Truth must always prevail. When we condone sin in the name of love we have compromised the Truth. When tolerance, inclusion, political correctness, liberalism, license, and homosexuality are tolerated and even promoted in the name of love we have sacrificed the Truth. If you really love homosexuals you will tell them the Truth. Christ died for them and wants them to repent of their sinful lifestyle and be saved and become a new creature in Christ. No one is saved to continue in sin. You cannot remain a Muslim and be saved, you cannot remain an adulterer and be saved, and you cannot remain a homosexual and be saved. The Gay Rights movement is the new cult of our day and unless Christians wake up it will the cause of our loss of freedom to Preach the Word of God!!!
Opinion vs Love
written by javadave61, January 06, 2010
"The problem is that some people who call themselves Christian want to sacrifice the Truth in the name of love. When Truth and Love are in opposition to each other, Truth must always prevail."

No, Mr. McCord. The problem is that too many Christians today have OPINIONS about very complex issues that they simplistically flatten into a capital "T" undebatable TRUTH. The reason most Christians end up ineffectual is because they engage the world with this mantra... "When Opinion and Love are in opposition to each other, Opinion must always prevail." Our opinions are a resounding gong and a clanging symbol to the world because we've justified eliminating love. And if God is love, then we just eliminate God from our "truth." Your false dichotomy of "LOVE vs TRUTH" is a lie. Here's a Truth with a capital "T." You cannot be faithful to the teachings of Christ and justify eliminating love simply because it is inconvenient to the way you want to speak the truth.
