Thomas Marsden, to Baptist Church of West Chester, Pa., as choir director.

Bill Mathews, concluding his tenure as minister of music at First Baptist Church, Westfield, N.J., after 32 years, to accept a position in Delaware.

Daniel McGinty, to Church at the Crossing, Aledo, Texas, as high school youth minister.

Rick Meade, to Lynn Garden Baptist Church, Kingsport, Tenn., as pastor. He comes from the pastorate of Bethel Baptist Church, Lebanon, Va.

Tim Mohon, to First Baptist Church, Fredericktown, Ohio, as pastor. He comes from the pastorate of First Baptist Church, Greenfield, Ohio.

Joy Perkett, to First Baptist Church, Essex, Conn., as pastor, effective Sept. 28.

Ellen Price, to Ardmore Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, N.C., as interim minister of invitation and hospitality.

Gary Price, resigning as pastor of First Baptist Church, Eldorado, Texas.

Allan Smith, to Greystone Baptist Church, Raleigh, N.C., as associate minister of students.

RETIREMENT

DEATHS

John S. Davenport, 89, died Aug. 22 in Chesapeake, Va. He began his full-time ministry in 1959 as pastor of Louisa (Va.) Baptist Church and continued to pastor Baptist congregations for 34 years. He is survived by his wife, Martha; son, David; daughter, Miriam Fischer; and four grandchildren. 

Joseph Donald “Don” Reeves, 84, died Aug. 18 in Winston-Salem, N.C. He retired in 1994 from Wake Forest University as professor of education. Prior to that he was an assistant professor at Oklahoma Baptist University and director of children’s work at Riverside Church in New York City. He is survived by his wife, Nona; daughters, Donna Jakob and Nona Jo Reeves; sons, Charles and James; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

John M. Shaffer, 86, died Aug. 2 in Fallston, N.C. In his 54 years in ministry he was pastor of six Baptist churches in Virginia. His last years of ministry were spent as director of missions for the South Mountain Baptist Association, Vale, N.C. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons, Dennis and John; daughter, Diane Easton; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Anna L. Smith, 88, died Aug. 19 in Asheville, N.C. She began her career as minister to high school and college students at First Baptist Church, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She also served on staff at Central Baptist Church, Miami, Fla., and First Baptist Church, Jackson, Miss. In 1977 she became the first National Single Adult Consultant for the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources) in Nashville, Tenn. Since 1986 she had been an active member at First Baptist Church, Asheville, N.C. She claimed as family members the parents of her godchildren, Ben and Loren McKibbens; four godchildren and five great-godchildren.

John M. Trojak, 25 years as senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Sharon, Pa.
