Many of my friends and ministerial colleagues recently returned from the Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant in Atlanta full of enthusiasm. I myself have yet to feel much excitement.
Dick McCartney, my editor when I worked at the Oklahoma Baptist Messenger, used to wander into my office, bottom feeding for an editorial idea. “What should I view with alarm this week?” he would ask.
I must confess that I do not share the concern voiced across the spectrum of Baptist life that Baptists are afflicted by historical amnesia. My concerns lie elsewhere, and so I must explain.
I have enjoyed reading Beth Newman’s thought provoking editorials on the Baptist identity. Her most recent opinion piece, “Historical Amnesia and the Christian Creeds,” stirred memories of conversations I have had with other Baptist theologians.
