BRISTOL, Va. (ABP) -- Michael J. Puglisi unexpectedly resigned as president of Virginia Intermont College Jan. 25, apparently at the request of trustees of the Baptist-affiliated school.

And in what college administrators and trustees said was a move unrelated to the president’s resignation, the school announced it will reduce its staff by about 40 persons.

TEMPLE, Texas (ABP) -- First Baptist Church in Temple, Texas, has suspended operation of its 40-year-old Child Development Center indefinitely due to smoke and water damage from a Jan. 19 fire that authorities ruled arson.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (ABP) -- A top official of the Southern Baptist Convention said Feb. 3 he is confident that a church mission team being detained in Haiti on suspicion of child trafficking acted in good faith but that Haiti's government interpreted their actions "in the worst light possible."

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti  (ABP) -- Servando Silva and Matt Johnson were packed for Haiti before there was a trip to pack for.

The Mission, Texas-based nurse and doctor had prayed for an opportunity to help meet medical needs in the wake of the Jan. 12 earthquake that killed roughly 200,000 people. Within 24 hours of that prayer, a Baptist group was providing a chance for them to put their medical expertise to work leading clinics in a suburb of Haiti’s capital.
