SBCV marks 10th anniversary

The Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia kicked off their annual meeting Nov. 13-14 with a look back at the 10-year-old convention's history through videos and testimonies telling the story of God's work through the SBCV's nearly 500 churches.

RUSTBURG, Va. (BP) -- A Virginia woman who allegedly suffocated her newborn baby hasn’t been charged with murder because the umbilical cord was still attached to the placenta which was still in the mother. According to Captain L.T. Guthrie of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, the case is still under review, but it appears that the intentional suffocation of her newly-born infant will go unpunished.

ORLANDO, Fla. (BP) -- Georgia pastor Bryant Wright will be nominated for president of the Southern Baptist Convention, it was announced March 12. Wright is founding pastor of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in suburban Atlanta, which began in 1981 and now reports average weekly worship attendance of 4,383.

Hunt: CP is not the only door into the SBC

DALLAS (BP) -- Johnny Hunt, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, said substantial giving through the Cooperative Program is not the only way of participating in the work of the convention and Baptists must stop using a CP giving percentage as a measuring rod for commitment to the Great Commission.

Baptists celebrate 50 years in Vietnam

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam (BP) -- Shortly before the fall of Saigon in 1975, Le Quoc Chanh, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), came with his wife and young son to the home of missionary Sam James, who now lives in Richmond.
