Will Campbell delivered these remarks at a ceremony in Nashville, Tenn., honoring Baptist newspaper editor Jack Brymer with the inaugural Associated Baptist Press Religious Freedom Award.
Brymer had recently walked away at age 58 after 10 years as editor of the Florida Baptist Witness rather than accept restrictions on what type of articles he could publish. He resigned abruptly at the close of a two-day meeting of the newspaper’s governing board on Aug. 26, 1994, citing "continued harassment" by directors over his reporting of ongoing controversy in the Southern Baptist Convention.
A 30-year veteran of Baptist journalism, Brymer worked free-lance for a year and in October 1995 landed a newly created position of director of publications at Samford University. Today he is retired and lives in Birmingham, Ala.
Will Campbell, a farmer, author and social activist who died June 3 at age 88, brought characteristic wit and wisdom to these remarks to directors, staff and friends of Associated Baptist Press on Oct. 27, 1994.
